OUR FASCINATION WITH ASAFO FLAGS HAS BEEN A LONG-STANDING PASSION, DEEPLY ROOTED IN THEIR VIBRANT ARTISTRY AND RICH CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE.

For years, we have been captivated by the vivid stories and intricate designs of these flags, and it has been a dream of ours to create a collection inspired by them. Today, we are thrilled to introduce our Asafo collection—a series of five jacquard-woven blankets that bring the beauty and heritage of Asafo flags into contemporary homes.

ASAFO FLAGS OF THE AKAN PEOPLE IN WEST AFRICA

Asafo flags of the Akan people are a treasure trove of artistic expression. These flags tell vivid and colourful stories, using appliqués of imagery that translate into local proverbs. This tradition has existed for at least 400 years, dating back to the 16th century. History states that these flags were inspired by European models after European trading companies set up forts along the coastlines in the region. The Akan are a vast clan who exist largely in Ghana, as well as in Côte d'Ivoire and Togo. Each of these countries has its own versions of this fascinating textile art, but it is the Ghanaian versions from the Fante sub-group that are the most colourful and have mesmerised us for ages.

war people

Asafo in Fante means "war people," because the Asafo companies were originally military units responsible for the protection and defence of their communities. Over time, these companies evolved to play various social and political roles within Akan society, and their flags became a central part of their identity and expression. These flags are not merely decorative but serve as potent symbols of the group's power, bravery, and communal values

THE COLLECTION INCLUDES FIVE DISTINCT THROW BLANKETS:

Chief Palaver, Good Morning, Heavy Catch, To Asafo Park, and Asaf O'donis. These names evoke the narratives and scenes traditionally depicted on Asafo flags, bringing a playful and light-hearted touch to the collection. Chief Palaver, for instance, illustrates what appears to be two men settling a dispute, reflecting the role of Asafo companies in mediating conflicts and maintaining order within their communities.

The result is a collection that not only pays tribute to the artistic heritage of the Akan people but also offers a contemporary take on the traditional designs.

Unfurl a tale of twin heroes, the handsome Ata Kakra the valiant and the handsome Ata Panyin the wise. Here, the truth slithers away – Kodwo that snake, once a trusted confidante, now exposed by the twins' cunning, scurries off, leaving a trail of slime and shame (his charlatan staff also withering in shame with him). Soaring high above, a metal bird messenger streaks across the sky, its candy-coloured propellers a beacon of victory.
